Skimmers

Little to no foam production

_My skimmer was working great, now there is no foam head or anything being pulled out of the water?_ This is often an indication that you may have a skimmer that is too large for your size aquarium or you have no organic waste to be pulled from the water. Once the skimmer pulls out all the waste matter the skimmer sits in idle till the waste level builds back up to build a healthy foamate. Another important thing to remember is that whenever you put your hands in the aquarium or feed your tank’s...

How to choose the right protein skimmer

CHOOSE THE RIGHT SKIMMER FOR YOU AND YOUR SYSTEMSIZE:Every skimmer has a minimum and maximum capacity of water purification and choosing the appropriate skimmer for your system is very important. Generally speaking, a skimmer size should be matched to your bioload and system. Of course, the biomass and the average amount of food added affect the requirements of water purification and filtration equipment to an extent. Aquarium enthusiasts should make decisions by the actual situation. Key elemen...

Skimmer Maintenance

Collection Cup: Should be taken away and clean at least once a week, depend on the organic buildup that has accumulated. Cleaning will enhance the extraction of dissolved organics substantially. Skimmer Pump: Should be cleaned and inspected every 6 months with a mild vinegar & water solution. Venturi (air induction port): Should be inspected monthly for salt buildup. During the winter/drier months you may need to inspect and clean weekly. Skimmer Body: clean every 6 months or as needed by wip...

Reef Octopus Skimmers and Ozone

The Reef Octopus skimmers are constructed from materials that are completely resistant to ozone. However, it is crucial for the user to provide adequate ventilation and carbon filtration when introducing ozone into a protein skimmer. It is highly recommended to conduct thorough research and take all necessary precautions to ensure the safe and proper injection and venting of ozone to prevent any potential harm.

Acrylic crazing or cracking

Acrylic that suddenly changes in appearance like this is due to a chemical reaction. Acrylic is a product that is made from fossil fuels. When it comes in contact with a high viscosity chemical such as most household cleaning agents, paint fumes, hair dye, toe polish remover, denatured alcohol or any CFC based compressed can fumes this will cause the acrylic to stress and if the chemical is in direct contact with the acrylic it could cause it to crack or have a pealing effect. The use of PVC sol...

How do you dial in a protein skimmer?

All skimmers are made differently and require different settings and environments to obtain optimal performance. The instructions below are intended as a guideline to help you adjust your skimmer. - Allow the skimmer to break in 3-4 weeks before attempting to dial it in and clean the neck regularly with only water. - For in-sump models, make sure the sumps water level is consistently right below the output tee on the skimmer (usually at 5.75-6” on most of our SRO skimmers) throughout the d...

What water level should I run my in-sump protein skimmer at?

This is a rather common question we get asked about for in sumpprotein skimmers, there really is no set depth that the skimmer needs to run in. The two things you need to look for is that the pump is covered with at the minimum or 1″ of water about the highest point on the pump and second is that the water level in the sump is below the water outlet pipe on the skimmer. You want to see the water flowing out of the skimmer and drop down into the sump water.

Skimmer overflowing

There are several common reasons a protein skimmer will overflow * Chemical Reaction -Some chemicals react with the air that the skimmer produces and causes the skimmer to over produce foamate.Chemicals known to cause skimmers to overflow are, red slime remover, medications, reef/frag putties (epoxy Putty) frag glues, water conditioners, dechlorinators, stress coat, fresh filter socks, newly mixed salt, bacteria (seeding) additives as well as other dosing medias. In order to remove these chemica...
