Can someone can provide more specific info on how the Smart ATO works? What triggers the sensor to determine whether or not the water level is low?

Bryan,

The Smart ATO is triggered by an optic sensor. The sensor determines optically when it is under water and when it is not and that is how the unit works.

Hope this helps!

Does it need light to work. I have a light over the refugium section of my sump, so the return section where the ato would be gets indirect light. The light is sometimes on a timer and it gets completely dark in the stand when the light is off. However, I have not beed using the timer lately and have been leaving the light on all of the time.

Bryan,

It does not need light to work. Indirect light or surrounding light will not cause it to not work. That does not mean you can go ahead and put a MH bulb right over it and expect it to work flawlessly... :-)

Changes in surrounding light will not cause issues with the controller.

Hope this helps,
