Gyre placement

Good morning,

I am currently building a tank that's 48x30. I would like to replace my 2 Vortech pumps on the side with 1 Gyre on the back. I would like to place this horizontally in the back/center just below the overflow. In this configuration the flow would be back to front across the 48 inch spread. Could I get away with this setup, and just 1 pump or would it be better to wait for the bigger/longer model that might cover the 48 inch width better. I should add that I am really not looking for a lot of flow being mostly LPS in this aquarium

Thanks

Mark

you can definitely have this configuration with one pump. Personally, I like the two pump configuration better to create different types of flow cycles. You can install a gyre horizontally as you are planning and the other can be placed vertically and then run them in pulsing mode. This will provide you with some amazing flow and every now and then, they will clash creating random flow within the tank.

Thank you, what do you think is the lowest I could place the pump, and still maintain the gyre function. I am thinking about 4 inches below water level because of the overflow.

Thanks

The higher you place the pump, the better gyre it will generate. So you will need to test as every tank is different.

Carlos,

When the Gyre is horizontal and high on the backwall and centered and in alternating mode the sand in the front tends to move towards the back...Any suggestions?

yes, you will need to lower the speed of the pump or you can lower the pump a few inches and rotate the cages up so that water goes upwards. That will diminish the force of the water at the opposite corner of the gyre.
