I recently purchased the reef octopus classic 90 hob . I'm leaving the valve open to try and break in . My tank is a 38 gallon bow front . Fish and corals. Over a year old now . All from scratch . It's considered well stocked . Is this skimmer too much for my tank ? And also . Where should I set the valve from completely open to partially closed to achieve maximum skimmate ?

Yes, that skimmer is way too big for your system. A 38 gallon tank heavy stock is still a 38 gallon tank and nowhere near the minimum required gallon amount for that skimmer to work correctly.

Well it works , and produces skimmate ! I ran a seaclone skimmer on it before this reef octopus . Also meant for 100 gallon tank . It also worked just fine . Produced tons of skimmate . Was just getting old . Also the reef octopus has been running for four days with the valve fully open . I slightly closed it . And it's skimming .When I said heavily stocked , I meant it . From what I read on the reef octopus I purchased is , a bit over 100 gallon tank , 75 gallons in a well stocked tank . So I shouldn't have this on my tank when it works ?

If it works then go for it. The tank range is set because the manufacturer has tested the skimmers and they are unable to get a consistent performance when the skimmer is outside the range specified. While it may work for you, it may not work for another customer with similar setup because each tank is different. Also, it could work today and then tomorrow it may not.

Well I do know that . I know no two tanks run the same ! Every one has their own ways . My main question was the valve setting . I babysit it when I mess with it . When I go to work I open it up just in case of over flow . Since it is new . But it seems like it's already doing it's job !
