I just installled the classic 100-hob skimmer in a 4 year old tank. It bubbled up and filled out of the collection tube in box at first and then it's just foaming about 3 quarters the way up the tube to the collection box now. The instructions were slim to none and I have the surface degreaser connected to pump fully submerged under the water. I'm wondering if it should be out of the water some or why I am not getting foam to reach top of collection tube and go in the collection box. Any help please? Thanks

The surface degreaser should be completely submerged and just below the water surface.

Okay it is. Do you know why it is only foaming half way up the collection tube?

Most likely because the skimmer is brand new and needs to break in. The process usually takes 3 weeks. Also, make sure that the skimmer is properly sized for the aquarium you have. If you are running the skimmer in an aquarium that is too small for the skimmer, the skimmer will not foam up either.

You are on the light side of bioload. How old is the tank?

It's 4 years old. We had problem after problem at first. As soon as we got everything figured out we got aptasia everywhere and couldn't get rid of it. It killed all corals and we lost fish and anenomes. nowcwe fully got rid of aptasia and it's been gone for 4 months but algae overload started. We decided to get a protein skimmer so we wouldn't have to add all the chemicals so often to lower the high levels of nitrates and all that. Our tanks right now looks like we just set up a saltwater tank!

We were over feeding because we were used to more fish so we feed every 3 days now

Most likely the skimmer needs to break in as it is brand new.
