Just hooked up my old NWB 150 with my new pump, Aquatrance 2000S. Problem is that it will not stop overflowing. I have run it for a day and it is running wide open but I can't put the collection pump on it because it will overfill in less than a minute. I removed the skimmer and ran it over night in a 50:50 mix of vinegar and water. Replaced the next morning and it still is overflowing. The collection cup has bubbles coming out the top and water pouring out the drain hole. It is in 8 3/4 water exactly where it was before my bold pump gave out. I have not treated the water but it did go 2 weeks without any skimming as I had to wait for the adapter that goes between the Aquatrance and the skimmer. What to heck is going on?

I think I just spoke with you on the phone. Please raise the skimmer so it is in 6" of water and the issue will go away. Your skimmer is running too deep and there is not enough space inside the skimmer for the water and the air to mix properly before reaching the top of the skimmer. If you raise the skimmer, you will be lowering the water level inside the skimmer and creating more space for the water and air to mix properly.

I really appreciate you calling me back. I have raised the skimmer to 6" of water. The issue has improved but I still have to the the drain on the collection pump open because it would fill too quickly with water. I can't go any higher without being unable to remove the collection cup to drain. It hits the bottom of my stand. What do I do now? Just give it a few days?

Are you running activated carbon? Please run fresh carbon and the skimmer should start to go back to normal. I think there may be something in the water that may also be contributing to the issue. If so, carbon will take care of it.

Started running Matrix Carbon and Purigen yesterday. I have noticed several dead snails and and cardinal was dying yesterday and I got him out before he had completely died.

We have heard reports of Purigen making the skimmer overflow but have not confirmed.

I have removed the purigen and only running carbon. The skimmer is running wide open and is still overflowing. Do you have any other suggestions or do I just need patience?

Are you also doing water changes? The carbon will not remove all the perigen from the water. Water changes will do most of that and carbon will just remove whatever is left.
