No, you can just install it and run it. You will need to allow for the skimmer to properly break in and that can take around 3 weeks. During this time, the skimmer will act erratically and may overflow so make sure you run it at the lowest setting (open up the gate valve/wedge valve) and then after the 3 weeks, you can start to close it up and tune the skimmer.
