Gyre and sexy shrimp

Hello! I am considering a Gyre 230 for my 45 gallon with a group of sexy shrimp as the main inhabitants. I am concerned that the gyre pump may post a danger to the shrimp. One solution I have used in the past on other powerheads is to wrap a plastic mesh around the intake of the pump. I know the Gyres come with a mesh netting but I would feel safer with something a bit smaller. I typically use a plastic mesh grid used for needlepoint wrapped around the intake of the pump. Would doing something like this damage the gyre pump in any way? I'm sure it would reduce the flow of the pump which would be fine for me but I wouldn't want to damage it. Thank you!

The Gyre XF230 comes with a screen guard to help prevent the unlikely event of something getting into the pump. See here: http://d.pr/i/d23J

Hi Jeremy! Thanks for the reply. I looked at the netting in my local fish store recently and the mesh seemed to leave a little too much room between the weaving for a small shrimp to fit through. I usually use a much tighter knit plastic mesh but I'm not sure how the Gyre would hold up to that. I just don't want to break it if I restrict the flow too much. Thanks again!
