On the HOB (BH-1000) instructions, there are parts y and z. Yet there are no names for them. What are their names?
Also I have seen part Y set upside down and yet the skimmer still worked. Is there any advantage either way?

The parts don't have a name aside from elbow and female threaded adapter.
Putting it upside down may create an unwanted syphon with unwanted bubbles. It is best to leave it straight up or angle it a little bit but still have it pointing upwards so the water gently trickles down the elbow and back to the tank without much agitation and therefore minimizing bubbles.
