Thank you for contacting us. The box should have come with an assembly diagram that should help you put the skimmer together without any issue. If you have issues, feel free to ask here and we will be happy to answer them.
In terms of location, make sure the ENTIRE skimmer is higher than the sump. DO NOT place the skimmer next to the sump. The skimmer drains via gravity so it MUST be installed higher than the sump. The output plumbing should NEVER go up even 1 degree. It should be 100% horizontal or downward. If you need to go up and above the sump wall, you need to either raise the skimmer or drill the sump so you can place the plumbing without tilting it up. If your plumbing goes up, so will the water level inside the skimmer which will in turn end up overflowing.
