The hole on the side of the reaction chamber is an overflow hole that prevents the skimmer from overflowing if the intake of water or air exceeds normal running conditions. It is important not to cover this hole up. Most HOB skimmers will experience water flowing through this hole for the first 1-2 weeks as the skimmer releases oils and form a slime coat of bacteria on all submerged surfaces.
