Help with hypersensitive 110S adjustment

My 110S has been in my sump since I set up this tank two months ago. I make minute adjustments (as small as I possibly can) on the valve, and the result is nearly zero skimmate in a 24 hour period or a completely overflowing cup. Any suggestions?

Hi Wally,

What is the water level inside the skimmer body?

The skimmer sits in exactly 7.5 inches of water in the sump. The inside water level is between 4.5 and 5.0 inches. At this level the skimmate is still very wet, only slightly colored, and I get about 8-10 hours before I need to empty it.

are you using any chemicals or media in your tank?

I'm dosing a small amount of Red Sea NoPox (1.5ml/day on a 40 gallon water volume), Red Sea Foundation A, B & Sea. I'm following the Mixed Reef Formula (water parameters) recommended by Red Sea. I have carbon in the sump.

The water level INSIDE your skimmer needs to be 6.5" to 7.5" and that may be part of the problem. Other is the NO3POx will cause wet, and sometimes slimy, skim mate. I would raise the water level inside your skimmer and open the gate valve until the bubbles are at the neck of the skimmer, where the cup connects, and not flowing over. Try that and let me know how it works.

Thanks will try this

Just to confirm by internal water level you are suggesting that is should be set at or above the bubble plate (j. in the exploded parts diagram for the Classic-110SSS)?

I thought that there is one adjustment, the gate valve, which also adjusts the internal water level. Not certain I can adjust the internal water level to this height without completely swamping collection cup. Is there a separate adjustment that I'm missing?

thanks again!

Yes the water should be above the bubble plate, or about halfway up the skimmer body and the bubbles should come up to the neckline. The gate valve is the only way to adjust the water level.
