skimmer output too short

I just purchased a Reef Octopus NWB 110 skimmer. The instructions state that the recommended water height is 7 inches or more. The problem is that when the skimmer sits in 7 inches of water, the output (gate valve) is half under water which is not supposed to be. I need a longer connection pipe between the elbow attached to skimmer and the gate valve. It is an odd size and impossible to find something at a local hardware store. Also, the skimmer has been running for two days now and the gate valve is open all the way, but water is constantly overflowing into the collection cup. (The cup fills up with just water every minute or so) Please explain these issues. Thanks

Jared,

Water depth is more important than the output being under water. The output being under water has no influence over the efficiency of the skimmer. If you extend the output pipe so the output is above water, you will be raising the water level inside the skimmer and they you will always overflow.

In terms of overflowing, how old is the tank?

The tank has been running for about 7 months. Currently I have the skimmer sitting in about 7 inches of water. The output is about half submerged. I still have the gate valve all the way open and it has been constantly overflowing for about 30 hours now...

Are you running carbon? Are you adding any type of chemicals such as algaecide, red slime remover, bacterial startup, water conditioner or dechlorinator?

I am running carbon (chemo-pure) and no, no chemicals.

Did you have a skimmer on that system prior to installing the Reef Octopus one?

That is probably the reason in combination to the skimmer breaking in. Please allow the skimmer to run for 3 weeks and the overflowing will go away as time goes by.
