I looked long and hard for a manual for my Reef Octopus POV-DC1. At the Reef Octopus website I find a link for "system maintenance" and under that a link for "products manuals" (sic). Here is that link:

http://www.reefoctopus.com/products_intro.aspx?CateID=99

However, I CAN NOT find a manual for the POV-DC1 protein skimmer. Does this unit go by another name? There are over 100 manuals on this page so I can't look at each one.

The support page for Reef Octopus brings me to the Coralvue web page. I recognize your company as the one through whom I purchased my POV-DC1.

At this time my POV-DC1 does not seem to be working at all, though the green power lights appear to be working. I could use some prompt help with this situation!!

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Is the pump working? What seems to be the issue with the skimmer? Please be as specific as possible so that we may be able to help you efficiently.

Hey Carlos been a long time, right? I think I probably got help from a local aquarium specialist to set it up. But that was long ago and today I'm on my own, and needing help. The basic issue here is I have NO IDEA how to "tune" this skimmer:

there is a pump with 4 settngs
There is a gate valve

There must be some interplay between the two.

At this time the skimmer seems to be running "too fast" as it just froths but does not "catch" anything". Unfortunately, I have NO IDEA how to tune this device.

"Before calling the dealer, please ensure you have read the manual". Those are your instructions from the 2 pages of instructions I received.

So is there a manual? If there isn't just let me know and then I will ask specific questions, but I'm an organized, technically focused engineer type and I like information to be available and easy to get to. Considering that I paid over $500 for this skimmer, and considering that YOUR instructions direct me to refer to the mythical manual, may I please have it, or a link to it.

What size tank are you running the skimmer on? Also, what is the water depth (in inches please) that the skimmer is in?

The tank is just a little shy of 100 gallons. The skimmer sits in cistern (below) which in turn is 54 gallons at the current depth of 13 inches. The skimmer is elevated somewhat by a piece of limestone and it is currently in about 9" of water. The setting on the pump control is now at 3.

You are running the skimmer too deep and you are probably experiencing overflow issues even if running the pump at low speeds. The skimmer should be in only 5.5" of water. Bring the skimmer up so it is only in 5.5" of water and then you should be able to tune the skimmer a little bit better. The extra space at the top will allow you to run the pump a little higher and open the valve a little more to get a dryer foam at the top and a more concentrated skimmate.

Great thanks. I'll give it a try. Also from prior replies it sounds as if there is actually no manual for my skimmer. Is that correct?

No, there is no manual for it. That's why we are here if you have any questions. Every tank is different.

OK after a LOT of work I was able to position the skimmer so it sits in right around 5.5 inches of water. That puts the water level in the unit at just below the top of the red pump when it is not plugged in. Sound OK?

So I have two settings to play with: pump speed and the valve. So what am I shooting for? bubbles that just barely rise up and fall into the chamber?

Also, the pump has 6 settings. Can I assume that the lower settings (as indicated by the number of red indicator lights) of this pump use less energy, so that I can shoot for a lower pump speed with a (somewhat) more closed valve is as effective as a higher pump speed and a more open valve?

Thanks

Hey Carlos how are you? I have another question but I'll need to send a couple pictures because I don't know terminology for the parts. How can I do that?
