My brand new skimmer is overflowing with bubbles. I’m trying to break it in but it’s causing so much bubbles it’s leaving my sump and filling my display tank with micro bubbles. Any suggestions? It’s sitting in 6”and 3/4” of water in my sump . Tanks new too but I can’t even break in the skimmer because it’s creating to many bubbles for my sump and display tank. Sump will overflow with bubbles in 30 minutes, tank has a lot of micro bubbles. I have it on max flow which seems to slow it down a little less then minimum flow which blows bubbles out like crazy. Please help.

There are several common reasons a protein skimmer will overflow but the most common is a chemical within the water itself.

Chemical Reaction - Some chemicals react with the air that the skimmer produces and causes the skimmer to over produce foamate. Chemicals known to cause skimmers to overflow are, red slime remover, medications, reef/frag putties (epoxy Putty) frag glues, water conditioners, dechlorinators, stress coat, NEW filter socks, newly mixed salt, bacteria (seeding) additives as well as other dosing medias. In order to remove these chemicals from the water column we suggest that you do several 20% water changes over the period of a month and add a good amount of fresh activated carbon to the system and change out every week till the skimmer has returned to normal operation.

What’s the level I should have my skimmer sit at in my sump ? I keep getting conflicting answers. What is the best setting to have the skimmer break I’m at? Max or minimum

The correct water depth is 7-10inches and during the break-in period, the skimmer wedge valve should be all the way open.
