Maxspect Gyre Sizing Recommendation

Hello, I'm new to the aquarist world and am putting together specs for a new tank. The display volume will be 54 gallons and size will be 35.5" L x 20" W x 21" H. There will be one return head located in the center back of the tank feeding return water to the DT. I would like to use the Maxspect Gyre products for my additional water flow needs. I'm especially interested in the water movement seen with the two-pump setup in LTC and OGC modes.

Will two pumps (likely the XF230 model) be too much movement in that size tank? Should I use only one XF230 and change one propeller to reverse, or is there enough adjustability to decrease the flow of two XF230s to meet my tank's needs?

Recommendations are greatly appreciated!

You can go with one or two of the 230 gyres it is up to you although, just one 230 gyre would be sufficient enough for that size tank. However you can cap off one end of each gyre to decrease the flow or you can dial it down using the controller. It all depends on what type of flow pattern you are trying to achieve which is a matter of personal preference.

I really like the idea of the LTC and OGC modes which simulate ocean currents and tides. I guess what I am striving for is maximum flexibility as I am new to this and will need to experiment to find the flow pattern that fits my needs and preferences. That being said, would you recommend using two and adjusting the flow, or is that same flexibility and functionality achievable with only one gyre?

Thanks!

To get the full benefits of the gyre with the advanced controller it is best to go with two pumps instead of just one.

Thank you Carlos. I'll use two of the XF230s then, and experiment with percent of flow, and perhaps capping one side of each if that is still too much?

Just try both pumps first one opposite to the other. Set them both to Random mode and find the max speed that works for your tank. You will not be disappointed!
