I am trying to maximize the performance of my skimmer and currently have it sitting in 6.25" of water in the sump. I do a maintenance cleaning every six months and I seem to be making adjustments weekly to maintain pea size bubbles within the neck of the skimmer. I noticed on some of the vendor websites the air hose on the air intake device is positioned vertical without much slack going up to the silencer. My air hose that came with the skimmer is much longer and curves like the letter "U" horizontally and without kinking, should the air hose be cut to go straight up and down for less restriction of air flow?

Sounds like you have it pretty much set up to spec. Shortening the airline may increase air intake but not by much but IMO makes for a much cleaner looking install. Feel free to trim the airline down to size.
