Loud Skimmer - Classic 150SSS

I just picked up a Reef Octopus Classic 150SSS 6"Skimmer based on the excellent reviews. I don't have the new tank setup so I've been running it in a bucket to break-in and test.

The air "silencer" is extremely loud. It sounds like a whistle.
Here is a video of it I uploaded to YouTube: https://youtu.be/EEKpFptw6J8

I can say that the skimmer motor is fairly loud too. I'm hoping that is because it's in a bucket.

Any ideas?

Is the air hose attached to the silencer cap? There is a video out there done by a 3rd party that shows the line being attached. Unfortunately that is incorrect. The airline should never be attached. It needs to be pushed up the red pipe but then just moved aside and the cap installed.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The air hose is not attached to the silencer cap. It is pushed up the red pipe. I've tried it positioning the tube at various levels within the pipe but it doesn't effect the whistle noise.

The vacuum sound and even sound emitted from the pump will be amplified in objects like buckets and the skimmer will quiet down as it breaks in which takes roughly 2-3 weeks.

Don't you think the whistling is loud? Did you hear it on the video?

I understand the motor sound should diminish after break-in but that whistle is crazy loud.

Can you take another video with the top of the silencer/output handle removed?

I checked the Venturi. I also took apart and reassembled the skimmer.

Yeah that whistle will die down as the skimmer breaks in. Right now your vacuum is higher than normal with fluxes. The small hole on the top forming a whistle. Also placing in the sump will make the skimmer quieter in general.
