Hello,

I have a BH100 HOB skimmer on my 28 gallon reef aquarium. Last week while my wife and I were watching TV the skimmer started making some noise like it was sucking air but then stopped making noise so I did not do anything. The next thing we notice is that 2 gallons of water was on the floor in my kitchen. The aquarium is overrun with pulsing Xenia so I pulled a rock out that may have been blocking the pump and put it in a different aquarium. I do not have any filters on the inlet of the pump so nothing is blocking the pump. After I did that it seemed to work okay. Last night while having dinner it made the same noise and started filling up with water again but I shut it off before it could overflow. The only thing that I notice is that the filter inside the unit is pretty dirty. How would you go about cleaning that filter?

Thanks

You will need to remove the filter and clean it. You will need to either remove the skimmer or try to reach for the sponge inside the skimmer. That will usually cause the skimmer to overflow along with using additives such as bacteria startups, algaecide and water conditioner for water changes.
