It has min and max water level on the skimmer. But even the min water level, it's still REALLY high. I use a rubbermaid 150g tub as a sump. It's not a small sump by any mean. If I match the min water level, it will only leave about 4 inch before overflowing.

Your skimmer should sit in 10-12" of water. The markings on the side of the skimmer represent internal water height suggestions.
