The guy in the setup video ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoOlriA2Zec ) has the water level in his tank 2" - 3" below the upper rim. This makes it easy to adjust the height of intake and output as he shows in his video. I have my water level 1/2" below the upper rim for 2 reasons. a: The water surface is hidden behind the plastic trim around the top of the tank and b: the volume of water is greater. The input and output component slits are as high as I can put them and are still roughly 1' below the surface. Do I raise the skimmer itself 1"? or cut the inner PVC for additional

You would need to cut the PVC to fit your tank. Please know that if you cut too much, you would need to purchase replacement parts. Those would not be covered by the warranty.

Having to cut pieces off a brand new purchased item is NOT very user friendly. This is also not described in the included instructions. I have the unit sitting on the rim of the tank at the only height possible, why is there no way to adjust the height? It is not described on the package that the water level must be 2" - 3" lower for the unit to function properly or I would have bought a different skimmer. To not include a couple of different length pieces of PVC is unacceptable if you intend to hold the customer responsible for a necessary modification of a brand new item.

Everybody keeps their water level different so have a piece that fits them all is impossible to have. That's why the manufacturer includes a piece that is on the longer side so that everybody can modify it and make it work for their systems.
