DCS150INT vs XS160

I've been considering purchasing the DCS150INT due to the great air/water flow numbers, but noticed on the website that the DC3500S has already been retired, as well as several other DC skimmers and pumps. Is there a problem with the DC pumps in general? I'm worried about buying a skimmer I that isn't reliable or buying something I can't find parts for in the future.

I was considering the XS160 before I came across the DC ones, but have heard via the grapevine you've been having trouble getting support for Sicce pumps yourselves. I have an 80G mixed reef with a 30G sump (total water volume of about 80G) and need something to fit in my 10"x15 1/5" skimmer section in my sump. Do you have any suggestions that are within my $350 (or so) budget?

Thanks,

Rusty

Rusty,

The DC pumps are being retired because there is a new version of the DC pump that will be coming out in the next couple of months. The current DC pumps will still be supported and parts will be carried.

In terms of a skimmer for your 80 gal tank that stays within your budget, here are some suggestions:

Carlos,

Thanks for the quick response!

My primary concern is the continued support of retired products, it sounds like you have that worked out.

I still like the idea of the DC driven skimmer because of the adjustability and the great airflow/waterflow numbers. As far as the DCS150INT is concerned it seems like a lot of bang for the buck, but I worry it's too much skimmer for my system. How do you feel about it compared to the XS160? I like the fact it has more space for the taper of the body than a Space Saver design and that I could potentially adjust it down to fit my system with the variable speed controller.

Do you know if the new DC pumps will work with the current generation DC skimmers? If they do, it would make me feel better about ordering the DCS150 and having another option or upgrade potential in the future.

Do you need a guinea pig to test one of the new DC skimmer(s)? I'd be more than happy to help out! :)

Kind regards,

Rusty

Rusty,

The new DC pumps will work with the current generation of DC skimmers. You will need to purchase the new pump to upgrade though.

The XS160 is retired because we are coming out with a new skimmer that will be using our own Reef Octopus AquaTrance Pump.

In all, all our Skimmers will be using Reef Octopus made pumps instead of third-party pumps. We believe that Reef Octopus pumps are better quality and better performance than any other pump out there.
