Can the pick up tube be lowered to the bottom of the tank so as to pick up more deitrus and aid flow ? And if so where would I get the extra tubing ?

  1. Would make it harder for the skimmer to start up
  2. Would add undesireable pressure to the pump for which it was not built for
  3. Would create issues when power goes out.  Skimmer would not be able to keep it's prime and would have to be started manually.
Best thing to accomplish what you are trying to do is to add more flow to the tank to make sure that all detritus is suspended in the water column so the skimmer can capture it.
