I have a SRO XP1000S that has been in service for just over 18 months use. I have been methodical about keeping unit clean including pump and impeller. Unit is a HOB model and is mounted on rear of 90 gallon bowfront mixed reef tank. This is an established tank, and I don't use any common water treatment chemicals like might be used in a beginner system. RO/DI water, I/O reef crystals. Only dosing to tank is 2 part, done on a 24 times a day cycle with dosing pump.

Recently I have been having issues where the unit will attempt to overflow without any reasoning or timing. I have the skimmer cup drains run into a 5 gallon drain bucket, where the water will sometimes fill up to top of bucket (5 galons).

One common denominator is that the effective speed of the pump and water flow thru skimmer gate valve and outflow increase exponentially during this issue. You can hear the sound of the flow from other room (only warning) and only opening the gate valve will help by increasing the amount of water being released and subsequent drop in skimmer neck. After a while, the flow reduces back to what I would call a normal flow (based on the 18 months of use), water level in skimmer drops way down to point about 7" down from top of skimmer base neck seal(not counting the collection cup part). Skimmer would need to be readjusted to actually skim at this point. If left alone, issue returns within 1-2 days.

I have checked the pump and impeller for damage, and cannot find any. The air line is completely open and not restricted (as verified by finger on top of muffler causes increase in pump output, less air). It appears that for some reason the actual pump impeller speed is varying. I did no see any swelling of the magnet (as far as I can tell). Is there an issue with the pump or impeller. Any other ideas.

Sincerely,

David

David,

Your skimmer is using the Bubble Blaster pump which only has one speed. I cannot increase the RPM as it was not made for that.

There are possible reasons why this is happening. The first one is that something is clogging your venturi which would be the same as partially closing the air intake. When you do that, the water level inside the skimmer goes up and it would make it overflow.

The other option is that something is being introduced in the water and is making the skimmer overflow. Are you running activated carbon? If so, I would recommend doing so just to make sure that the issue is not something in the water. Sometimes, even a hand cream or body lotion will make the skimmer overflow.

Carlos

Carlos,

I will take a look at the venturi, which is on the intake pipe. I do run activated carbon, and always use gloves. Will update you if I find anything suspicious in venturi.

Sincerely,

David
