I am leaning towards purchasing this tank but have read many comments claiming that the overflow is extremely loud. Are people just setting these tanks up wrong? Have any modifications been made to address this issue? Any tips?

The overflow is usually a little loud at first when the tank is breaking in. Once you get a good bacteria growth inside the pipe, it is actually very quiet.

Unfortunately we have not tested the modification you suggest so we cannot tell you if it will or will not work. You would be doing that at your own risk.
