Hello!

I am very interested in purchasing the maxpect gyre. I believe the 150 is the model I want as I have a 300g tank. Our tank is approx 8 feet long and 2 feet tall, with a center overflow. Has there been any testing done with the gyre in similar tanks with a center overflow? I'm wondering if the water movement would be obstructed and create dead spots, or if a vertical orientation would accommodate that?

thanks in advance!

The XF150 will work in tanks ranging from 3' to 5'. Anything longer than that and you will need two pumps to do the job. We have tested the Gyre in a 300 gal system and 2 pumps do a great job of moving water and preventing any dead spots. In terms of placement, it is really up to you as to how you want to place them. In a larger system, you have a little more freedom as to what you can do and how you can do it.

Thanks Carlos. When you say two pumps, I assume you mean 2 xf150's and one on each end of the tank? We would prefer to keep any powerheads on one side of the tank as it backs up against the wall, and is less visible. Image attached of what the tank looks like, and placement :)

Would we be better off waiting for the 170? I saw that it is rated for up to 1,000 gallons.

On an 8' long tank, the XF170 would be the ideal pump. At this time, there is no definite timetable as to when the pump will be out. Maxspect is saying first quarter or 2015 but even that is subject to change. Right now, Maxspect is working diligently on getting the smaller XF130 pump out, hopefully just after the holidays.

You may be happy with one XF170 and one or two XF150's to create other intermittent flows. It is pretty much all up to you.

Thanks Carlos!

I am fine with waiting for the 70w model but I'm not sure if I need that much power or not as this is a swim only tank. Really I'm only looking for a little extra flow to help with dead spots near the bottom of the tank where detritus tends to clump up :)

Somebody suggested mounting them on the overflow, and I'm ok with that but then I also have to account for if it will fit, and where the cords will go. As you can see I have live rock backing up against the overflow, so anything over 12" might not fit on the sides (skinny sides of the overflow). If I put the powerhead on the fat side of the overflow, it would definitely fit but I'm guessing the flow would not be ideal as it would be immediately smacking into the glass coming off the powerhead. Your thoughts?

thanks again!

just rotate the flow cages so the intake and outflow form an L. The intake is perpendicular to the back glass and the outflow is parallel to the back glass. That way each side will have it's own gyre rotation and will give you some nice random flow right dead center of the tank.
