I purchased this as a used skimmer. The skimmer will start out great building foam head in the skimmer and pull some good semi wet skim, but as the day goes on and I am not sure the time frame it takes. The skimmer will get to a thick foam head and pick the collection cup lid up. The foam head will eventually over flow the collection cup. I have tried lowering water level in skimmer and raising the water level, I get the same outcome either way.

What size tank (not including the sump)?
How deep (in actual inches) is the skimmer running?
How long has the skimmer been running.

Sometimes if your tank has too many organics and the foam head produced is very thick, it may require you to place something heavy on the lid to keep it down. Usually it is just temporary while the skimmer catches up to your tank.

The tank is 250 gallons. The skimmer is in 8-1/2" of water. The skimmer has been running roughly a month. I pulled the collection cup and clean it really good reinstalled and within an hour it produced the very dry foam head and pushed out through air holes on lid and picked lid up. Just can't seem to figure this skimmer out. What is the recommended water level in the skimmer?

Sounds like the skimmer is new and is in the process of breaking in. You have it installed at the right water depth so it is just a matter of tuning it.

Here is a short article on how to properly dial in your skimmer...

Carlos Chacon.. do you have a manual for this particular skimmer? I am still trying to figure out why the skimmer is filling up the neck and upper portion of body with "a lot" of foam head. The foam head then fills up collection cup pushing lid up and coming out the air holes in the collection cup. It did not do this when I first put it in. I can clean the cup with just water rinse and within 20 minutes it is right back,.

No, there is no manual for it as the skimmers are pretty straight forward. The article we provided you is very good at explaining where the water level should be. If your skimmer has lots of head and is pushing the lid off, then it means that your tank is very high in organics and the skimmer is pulling them out at a fast rate. Once the skimmer pulls out the excess organics from the tank (and you don't keep on adding them) the skimmer will go back to normal.

If that does not work, then you would be a good candidate for a neck extension.
