Hi,

I have 2 questions...

1. The silencer that allows air to be drawn to the pump, which way is up, the side with 2 inlet or the one?
2. What should be the water level within the skimmer? The water level currently is equal to the sump water level but from what I have gathered it should be much higher, only a couple of inches from the collection cup, is this correct? If so, how do I raise the water level within the skimmer?

thanks,

Hi,

For point 3 from the link, it says "set the inner water level at about 3/4 the way up the skimmer body". I've been trying this by opening the value all the way (on position) then moving it towards the off position about a full turn each time, wait a few hrs, sometimes a full day, the water level in the skimmer never rises about the the sump water level.

What do I need to do to get the water level up in the skimmer body? I have the skimmer sitting at 5 3/4 water depth, don't know what else to do.

thanks,

What skimmer model are you using?

I just finish cycling it about a week ago, it only has one small fish at the moment.

Well, that's the reason. The tank is new and you only have one fish so there is not much for the skimmer to remove. One fish does not produce that much bio load. As you add more fish and increase your feeding, then the skimmer will start to work correctly. Just have to give it time and slowly add bioload to your tank.

I can see the bio load affecting the how the cup fills up but what does that have to do with the high of the water within the skimmer?

Skimmers foam is a reaction to detritus in the tank. If you take a skimmer and place it in brand new clean salt water, it will not foam. If you take skimmate from another tank and add it to the clean water, the skimmer will start to work. The air reacts with the organic compounds in the water to create the foam. Not enough organic compounds and the skimmer will not foam up. That along with the fact that your tank and your skimmer are brand new will cause the skimmer to take longer to start working. In this case, patience is key.
