I don't have a marker line on my collection cup like some of the others I've seen. How far do I need to push the collection cup down? It's been running for about a month and nothing will collect in the cup. It also is still running out of the overflow hole. My tank is brand new so is there just not enough waste yet for it to really be collecting or am I doing something wrong? I can push the collection cup way down covering the overflow hole and it will foam over into the cup but its more water than waste.

Greg,

What's the model of the skimmer you are running? Since you have a new tank, do you have live rock and fish? What is your tank load right now? Also, what is your salinity?

Carlos- I have 1 fish and some crabs in it now as it is a new tank. I have about 40 lbs of dry rock with 3 lbs of live rock to sead it. My salinity is right where it should be (I can't remember the numbers without looking). I cut the intake hose off about an inch so the surface skimmer would be where it needs to be. I fooled around with the collection cup for about an hour, pushing it down and then up and finally just left it. I got up this morning and it is foaming out the top with the cup well above the overspill hole. So I'm thinking that the key to a good skim is getting a surface skim as I noticed the "Oil slick like stuff" at the top of my tank before I raised the intake valve. As far as the actual skimmer goes, you can't get an immediate result by adjusting it. You have to set it and wait several hours to get the results. It appears to be working now. I have the very bottom of the cup sitting on the water line which allows some space for air and skim to form at the tunnel base. Does all this sound about right? Thanks for your quick response.

Greg,

Sounds like you have a very new tank and it needs to break in first. The skimmer needs to just work it's way through your new system. It will be a little erratic at first because you have a new skimmer and a new system but as the system starts to settle down, it will start to work as you saw this morning.

It will stop working again and then start again. Just part of the break-in process.
