Hi. I was wondering if you had any info in regards to how the riptides are sized in regards to tank size? I have a 3' x 3' x 18" tank and I want to be able to run a riptide horizontally in one corner. Do you know which riptide model would work for that application?

We do not have much information about the pumps. The information will be released just before MACNA. We do know that the price of the 35 watt model (the one featured on the CVTV videos) will be priced at $299.99. We do not have any pricing or flow specs on the smaller 25 watt or larger 45 watt models. But please, do check our Facebook page and Coralvue website for the latest information and updates on the Gyre Riptide.

One other question you may be able to unofficially answer. What is the spread pattern of the water? Specifically how far away from the sand bed would it need to be, if run vertically in a corner, to keep it from causing a sandstorm? Since you have had access to the demo unit maybe you could share any experience you had with it in this regards.

Unofficially, I placed the 12" riptide vertically in my 48 gal office tank. The tank is only 17.7" tall with a .5" sandbed. I placed it on the right side back pushing water from right to left across the back and then creating the gyre towards the front and then heading back to the right side of the tank for the full cycle. At speed 7, I had no issues with the sand bed.

At higher speed I had issues with the sandbed on the left side back and left side front but was mainly because the tank is only 35.4" long. The pump was way too much at speed 7 or higher for my small size tank. We have tested it in 4' long tanks and there have been no issues with the sand. Tested in a 8' long tank and no issues there. Both the 4' and the 8' were tested at full speed.

Hope this helps, unofficially of course... ;-)

This does!!! I was worried I would have to wait for the 25w but now I know I don't have to. :)

Since they increased the wattage of the pumps how does that impact the sizing? Since I have a 36" x 36" x 18" tank would the 50w medium pump be too much? In your MACNA video it had to be dialed down to 40% to keep water from leaving the tank.

We have not received any additional information on the smaller version to give you an accurate answer. There is no doubt that the 50w pump will never run at 100% on your aquarium but it can be dialed down to accommodate your aquariums flow needs. The smaller one I would take up less space within the aquarium and would utilize a larger range of its available flow. We just do not have anything at the moment to truly compare the two sizes as far as flow and audible noise. I hope to have a smaller version closer to the release of the 50w Gyre to help future owners like yourself make the right choice for their system.
