Hello,

I have an SRO-2000SSS. It is sitting in 6.3 inches of water. I am curious why the air intake has a black cap over one of the intakes? What would change in the performance if I removed the cap?

Also it doesn't produce much skimate but I am wondering if it is just because I only have 6 fish in a 130 gallon total system, 105 for the display.

Thanks,

Christian

The black cap over one of the air intakes is correct. Having one intake capped is what makes the silencer work. If you remove the black cap, it will not affect the performance of the skimmer. If you cap both intakes, then you will be choking the skimmer and the skimmer will not work correctly.

The skimmer is rated for a tank (not including sump) of 130 gals with heavy filtration need. The skimmer will not produce constant skimmate if there is nothing to remove from the water. You have a small system with a very light load so the skimmer will not be as consistent as it would be on a larger system. As time goes by and your system matures and your biological load increases, the skimmer will become more consistent.

Thanks for the info. Is it OK running in 6.3 inches of water? Also the internal water level is right at the max waterline level, I am guessing this is the case because of the low load on the skimmer. Is that true? Thanks.

yes, that will be just fine. The max water line is a starting point. Every system is different and you really have to play around with it until you find the level that works for your system.
