I have this skimmer in my sump i adjust it in to skim properly. Then a day or two later i have to readjust because my water level drops slightly is this normal. Is and auto top off the only way around this.

Yes a water top off would remedy the change in your aquariums salinity as well as a more consistent performing skimmer.
