The pump for this unit ( OPT 3000) is extremely loud like a chatter noise. Is there anything that can be done about this? I have already cleaned the unit and all parts appear fine and functioning. Also how long does it take to "break in" the skimmer after a good cleaning? My collection cup is filling rapidly and no matter where I have the gate valve set this is occurring. Please help

How old is the skimmer and how old is your tank?

Carlos I do not have an age on the skimmer I purchased it used but it looks well taken care of. My tank is a 140g reef and is "new" so to speak. I just upgraded to this tank and put in new sand but carried over all of my rock and the contents of my refugium. What depth of water is suitable for this unit to be in? And where is my measure point on the skimmer as to where the water line should be?

How deep are you running the skimmer? Depending on the depth, it may answer the overflow question. In terms of the chatter noise, it may be the impeller that has gone bad. The pump is out of warranty so you can either purchase an impeller to try to fix the issue or purchase a new pump instead. It is hard to know what the issue is unless our techs can inspect the pump. You can send the pump in for repair but at that point, you will be better off just purchasing a new pump.

The skimmer is currently sitting in 9" of water. What is the proper depth for this skimmer as I do not have a manual for it. Also where should the water line be on the body of the skimmer?

Thank you for your help with this

You are running it too deep. Please raise the skimmer so that it is only in 7.5" of water. In terms of water inside the skimmer, it depends on your system. Here is a quick read on how to tune the skimmer...
