I'm having trouble getting my new Reef Octopus skimmer dialed in to make a foam/froth to skim. What's the optimum water depth it should sit in and is there any suggestions on what to do with the skimmer during this period?

Your new protein skimmer should sit in a certain water height and it is recommended that it stays stable at all times. The use of a sump baffles and/or auto top off unit will provide stable water depths for you sump and skimmer. You can find the recommended water depths for any of our Reef Octopus skimmers on their product page which is searchable at CoralVue.com.

For the first 3-4 weeks keep the valve on the open side and the running level low within the skimmer. After the skimmer has seasoned (broken in) you can begin dialing it in by closing the valve counter clockwise. steer towards retaining pea size (2-3mm) bubbles where the skimmer cup attaches to the body. I suggest you do the next part slow. Make small turns clock wise to get a wetter collection and counter clockwise to get a drier more concentrated collection. These adjustments should only be made once a day till you retain your desired collection.
